Hallo ihr Lieben,
Am Morgen wurden wir vom Regen geweckt. Da uns sowohl Ahornsirup als auch Brot fehlten, haben wir das Frühstück kurzerhand nach Port Alberni verlegt. Im Boomerang gab es dann ein echtes kanadisch-amerikanisches Frühstück: Rührei mit Speck und Waffeln für mich, und für Marcel sogar ein Steak mit Eiern – eine kräftige Stärkung für den Tag.
In the morning, we were woken up by rain. Since we were missing both maple syrup and bread, we decided to move breakfast to Port Alberni. At Boomerang, we had a truly Canadian-American meal: scrambled eggs with bacon and waffles for me, and for Marcel even a steak with eggs – a hearty start to the day.
Eigentlich wollten wir anschließend den Hole-in-the-Wall-Trail gehen. Leider haben wir den Einstieg an der Hauptstraße nicht gefunden – schade, denn wir hatten uns darauf gefreut. Also fuhren wir weiter zur Cathedral Grove, wo wir von den riesigen, uralten Bäumen beeindruckt waren. Manche Douglasien sind hier bis zu 800 Jahre alt – sie standen also schon, als Christoph Kolumbus seine erste Reise über den Atlantik unternahm.
Afterwards, we actually wanted to hike the Hole-in-the-Wall Trail. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the trailhead along the highway – a pity, since we had really looked forward to it. So we continued to Cathedral Grove, where we were deeply impressed by the massive, ancient trees. Some Douglas firs here are up to 800 years old – they were already standing when Christopher Columbus made his first journey across the Atlantic.
Als Nächstes steuerten wir ein sehr spezielles Ziel an: Goats on the Roof. Jeder, der mich kennt, weiß, dass ich Ziegen nicht einfach nur unsympathisch finde – ich habe wirklich und wahrhaftig Angst vor ihnen! Und hier laufen sie tatsächlich oben auf dem Dach herum. Ein ziemlich skurriler Ort, den ich eher aus sicherer Distanz betrachtet habe.
Next, we headed to a rather unusual destination: Goats on the Roof. Anyone who knows me is aware that I don’t just dislike goats – I am truly afraid of them! And here, they actually roam around on the roof. A quirky place that I preferred to observe from a safe distance.
Richtig spannend wurde es danach bei unserem Besuch der Deep Bay Marine Field Station (VIU). Hier dreht sich alles um die Meereswelt vor Vancouver Island, und es fühlte sich ein bisschen an, als hätten wir hinter die Kulissen des Ozeans blicken dürfen. Wir konnten ein echtes Skelett eines Bigg’s/Transient-Orcas berühren und erfuhren spannende Details über diese faszinierenden Meeressäuger. Besonders berührt hat uns eine Skulptur zu Ehren von Tahlequah (J-35), jener Orca-Mutter, die 2018 weltweit bekannt wurde, als sie ihr totes Kalb über zwei Wochen lang mit sich trug – ein zutiefst bewegendes Symbol für die enge Bindung zwischen Mutter und Kind im Tierreich.
Things got really exciting at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station (VIU). Here, everything revolves around the marine world off Vancouver Island, and it felt a little like we got to peek behind the scenes of the ocean. We were even able to touch a real skeleton of a Bigg’s/Transient Orca and learned fascinating details about these majestic marine mammals. What touched us most was a sculpture in honor of Tahlequah (J-35), the orca mother who became known worldwide in 2018 when she carried her dead calf for over two weeks – a deeply moving symbol of the strong bond between mother and child in the animal kingdom.
Dazu kam das riesige Skelett eines jungen Grauwals, der beim Tod gerade einmal fünf Jahre alt war. Unglaublich, wie groß er schon in so jungen Jahren war! Die Gespräche mit den Forschern waren lebendig, lehrreich und haben uns das Gefühl gegeben, für einen Moment Teil ihrer Welt zu sein.
There was also the enormous skeleton of a young gray whale, who had been only five years old at the time of his death. It was incredible how large he already was at such a young age! The conversations with the researchers were vivid, educational, and gave us the feeling of being part of their world for a moment.
Für die Nacht haben wir uns im Kin Beach Provincial Park niedergelassen – mitten in der Natur, unsupportet. Hier gibt es Schwarzbären und sogar Pumas. Allerdings meinte die Rezeptionistin mit einem Augenzwinkern, dass es heute Abend so voll sei, dass sich wahrscheinlich keiner blicken lassen werde.
For the night, we settled in at Kin Beach Provincial Park – right in the middle of nature, unsupervised. Black bears and even cougars roam here. However, the receptionist mentioned with a wink that it was so busy tonight that probably none of them would show up.
Und das Beste zum Schluss: Nach dem verregneten Morgen blieb es den ganzen Tag über trocken.
And the best part: after the rainy morning, the rest of the day stayed dry.
